Audience of 1960's Volkswagen Ad
This advertisement has a clearly defined audience of males interested in purchasing a new car. It specifically addresses the audience in the repetition of the phrase, "your wife." The advertisement targets males who have the purchasing power in the household. Most men at this time were the member of the family who had a meaningful job and made the most money. They were often seen as the "head" of the house. Following this, men usually made the decisions regarding purchases for the family. These "heads of the house" would also most likely agree with the stereotype that women were clumsy and not to be trusted with expensive technology. The audience would most likely agree with the message and be relieved that Volkswagen is eliminating some of the problems that their clumsy wives would inevitably cause.
I agree with you that the audience is males as it is pretty explicit in the ad. I am honestly shocked that this would be considered as a an "agreeable" ad, but the times were different then. It is so interesting to me so see the evolution of advertisements. No company today would even consider publishing an advertisement like this.
ReplyDeleteI agree with this audience post because of the clear and evident clues that the advertisement is geared towards males. I think that this advertisement is extremely degrading towards women, and the fact that the audience would like this advertisement in the 1960s is very frustrating.
ReplyDeleteI agree that this advertisement is aimed towards men. It clearly plays on the stereotypes men in the 1960s held of women, such as women being bad drivers. I also find it interesting how from today's perspective this ad feels almost like a parody. It is odd to think that there was a time when ads such as this were meant in a serious manner.
